Introduction:
Arthur Miller penned 'The Death of a Salesman' in the 1950s with the intent of critiquing American consumeristic society and its impact on individuals' perceptions of emptiness in their lives. The play's protagonist, Willy, undergoes a transformative journey that manifests as madness.
Personal interpretation:
In my design, color plays a significant symbolic role throughout the play, as the actors themselves imbue the space with color and the lighting shifts in tandem.
I selected Russian artists for inspiration as a nod to Miller, who faced accusations of communism due to this play. The set design draws inspiration from the artistic styles of Malevich and Mondrian, while the round staircase pays homage to the Monument to the Third International.
